Getting a tooth pulled is sometimes unavoidable, even if you took all measures possible to keep your smile strong and healthy. To most people, this may sound like a terrifying procedure, especially if it’s a new experience.

However, you may be surprised to learn that extraction is relatively painless and quick—it’s also much more common than you think! If you’re nervous about your upcoming dental visit, here are a few tips to help you overcome your fear of tooth extractions.

Know What to Expect

One of the biggest sources of dental anxiety stems from fear of the unknown. Knowledge is power, so understanding how a tooth extraction works may help ease your nerves.

Typically, these are the steps for a non-surgical extraction:

  1. A local anesthetic will be injected into the site.
  2. Your dentist will gently wiggle the tooth until it comes out.
  3. Once it’s loose, your dentist will remove the tooth.
  4. Finally, your dentist will apply gauze to the area to control the bleeding, and voila—you’re done!

If necessary, small incisions may need to be made in the gum tissue to free up the tooth. Of course, your dentist will walk you through the entire process beforehand and encourage you to voice any concerns you may have.

It’s the Best Choice for Your Oral Health

Extraction is only necessary for situations where a tooth poses a significant risk to your oral health. If your dentist recommends this procedure, that’s because it’s truly in your best interest.

Reasons for tooth extraction may include impaired or nonfunctional teeth, impacted wisdom teeth, denture preparation, or damaged or decayed teeth. Avoiding this procedure can lead to serious dental problems, such as gum disease or bone loss. If you’re feeling nervous about the whole ordeal, focus on how you’ll be better off after treatment.

Bring a Family Member or Friend with You

Having a loved one accompany you to your appointment can do wonders in easing your nerves. They’ll be there to support and comfort you before and after the procedure, so you can relax once you’re in the dental chair knowing that someone you trust is waiting nearby.

Practice Relaxation Techniques

Meditation and breathing techniques can be extremely calming, helping you relieve any stress and anxiety you may have about the experience. Once you find an effective calming method, you’ll be surprised to discover how much control you have over your anxiety.

Your dentist will do everything they can to make the experience as comfortable as possible. Before you know it, you’ll happily be walking out of the clinic realizing there was nothing to be afraid of!
