With Invisalign, a crooked, misaligned smile, gaps, and bite issues will soon be things of the past. This treatment is a common alternative to traditional braces and uses gentle pressure to move your teeth into a better position over several months or years. During this treatment, things with your smile will be a little different than what you’re used to. But, does that mean that you can no longer develop cavities? Continue reading to learn if you can get cavities during Invisalign treatment.

Can You Get Cavities During Invisalign Treatment?

Just like with traditional braces, it’s still possible to develop cavities while undergoing Invisalign treatment. While those who don’t have Invisalign usually only need to brush their teeth twice per day and floss every night, orthodontic patients need to clean their smiles more often. If they don’t, this will raise their risk of tooth decay as well as other oral health concerns.

What to Do If You Get a Cavity During Invisalign Treatment

If you develop a cavity while undergoing Invisalign treatment, make sure to contact your dentist. They will work with you to come up with a treatment plan, which will include removing the decayed portion of the tooth and filling it. If the damage is more severe, you may need a root canal.

In some cases, they may be able to structure the filling so that it’s the right shape and size to fit in your current trays. If not, you will need to have new ones made.

How to Avoid Cavities During Invisalign Treatment

Though your dentist can help if you develop cavities with Invisalign, it’s best to avoid them. A few ways to keep tooth decay at bay include:

  • Clean your trays properly: Along with cleaning your teeth after each meal, make sure to clean your aligners properly. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and non-abrasive toothpaste to scrub away plaque and food particles once per day.
  • Keep up with your oral hygiene: As previously mentioned, be sure to brush your teeth after each meal. This will get rid of food particles, plaque, and bacteria that have built up throughout the day.
  • See your dentist on a regular basis: Be sure to visit your dentist every six months for dental checkups and cleanings. This will allow them to make sure that your Invisalign treatment is going as planned. If it isn’t or if you’ve developed cavities with Invisalign, they will make the necessary changes to your treatment plan.
